The Battle of Blenheim A poem about the aftermath of a great victory in battle. Many years later, a local survivor has difficulty explaining the reason for the battle to his grandson.
The Drummer Boy The burial of a slain drummer boy by local children. Note at the end who those children were.
Omar the Tentmaker 11th century Persian poet, mathematician, and astronomer with a decidedly modern outlook on life.
Kameradenlied A German soldier's lament for a fallen comerade.
The Charge of the Light Brigade A heroic cavalry charge into the face of cannon fire during the Crimean War. The soldiers knew "someone had blundered".
Gunga Din A Kipling poem about a native servant who earned the accolade: "You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din!"
Agincourt The battle of Agincourt in 1415 Between the English commanded by Henry V and the French; origin of Shakespeare's phrase "We few, we happy few, we band of brothers". Roman Emperors.
Recessional Another Kipling poem. Like the slave accompanying a Roman Triumphator, this one seems to whisper "All glory is fleeting".
